Air cadets raise £750 for Royal Star and Garter Homes

This week the air cadets at 1130 (Telford North) Detached Flight were delighted to hear that their assistance at two Royal Star & Garter Homes fund-raising events has added over £800 to the cause.

The most recent event was a concert at The Place, Oakengates, by the Band of the RAF Regiment. As well as an excellent musical programme, the audience was also treated to an amusing but thought-provoking speech by Simon Weston, during which he encouraged them to give generously, but to avoid coins “for health & safety reasons”. The result was a collection by the cadets of £437.50.

At a previous event, The International Pigeon Show, last November, a similar bucket collection raised over £300. Major Roger Tweed (Rtd), the local organiser for the Star & Garter, is so pleased he has already booked the cadets for next year’s concert.

The Royal Star & Garter Homes is a charity that provides care for injured and disabled ex-servicemen. Last year they opened a new home in Sutton Coldfield.

Sgt 'Bev' back from Germany

Sergeant Matthew Beverley has recently returned from a cross-country skiing trip to Zwiesel, in Germany, just a short distance from the Czech border.

He was initially uncertain about going on the trip because cross-country skiing is regarded as unfashionable. However, he was persuaded to give it a try and was glad that he did. He had a fantastic time and, although he found that cross-country skiing was a tougher discipline than expected, he still returned with his bronze award. He would like to return next year to try for his silver or maybe even the gold.

When he returned Matt prepared a slide show presentation for the squadron and was so enthusiastic about the trip that, with a show of hands afterwards, most of the cadets would now like to go on it. At £170, all inclusive, it costs a lot less than booking one privately!
